The Benefits of Improving your Imagination

Imagination can give us the ability to fantasize and escape existence, but can also provide us with a means to gain new understanding about the world we live in.

Knowledge in the form of information can easily be amassed, but knowledge in the form of insight must be recognized in order to be obtained. We can’t peer into the unknown when we can’t envision its as-yet-unperceived possibilities. And that’s where imagination comes in.

It’s the vessel with which we can travel to unexplored regions of reality. And the tool with which we can link seemingly unconnected aspects of our human condition. To fantasize is therefor to cultivate our expertise in existential examination.

But that’s not all imagination can provide us with. Besides the power to perceive the factual characteristics of all mental and material matters, it can also make us see the more subjective and emotional side of things.

Understanding is knowing about the possibilities, while wisdom is knowing which possibilities to take. Imagination not only brings with it the detached ability to act, but also the intelligence to know why, how and when to act.

For example, by recognizing other peoples suffering, we will generally be less likely to keep contributing to it, or even become more likely to help relieve it. In that way, imagination also contributes to the forming of compassion and empathy.

Not allowing yourself to fantasize is therefor a wasted opportunity. It generates an impoverishment of the heart and mind. And a scarcity in the quality in the relations between us. Only by comprehending this, will we be able to do something about it.

So contemplate the practice of preoccupation and pick it back up. It may seem removed from reality sometimes, but by walking with your head in the clouds you may one day actually end up with both feet on the ground.

This concept is something that’s interwoven in most of my work. Many of the verses I write link a certain piece of wisdom or understanding to a fantastical or metaphorical setting.

Go to Wisdom Through Imagination to read the one verse I wrote to further elaborate on this idea and find a list of poems based on this theme.
